To clean the outside of your Xbox Oneuse a microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints, dirt, or other smudges. This should also remove much of the dust that often collects atop electronic devices, especially those stored in cabinets or under TV stands. In addition to exterior appearance, you may notice your console's fan making extra noise after many hours of use.
For some, this loud operation even results in slow game play or other issues. To correct this, use a can of compressed air to remove dust.
Be sure to unplug your device before starting any cleaning to avoid further damage or injury. Microsoft does not recommend attempting to open your gaming consoleand urges you to seek professional assistance for any internal repairs.
Unlike the Xboxthe Xbox One does not have a removable faceplate. Microsoft also warns against using any type of liquid cleaner, as even careful use can result in moisture damage in the console's ventilation system. Here's how to clean your Xbox Onealong with the materials you'll need to do so.
Unplug your Xbox One. Start by using a microfiber cloth to wipe down the entire exterior. These are often the same as the lens cloths used for eye glasses. Other versions for cleaning are called dust cloths. Use the cloth to carefully wipe down the outside of your console, including the top, bottom, front, back, and sides of the device. Routine cleaning will prevent heavy dust build up, which may require multiple cloths to fully clean your device.
Use circular motions to rub off fingerprints or smudges on the plastic parts of your device, including the front and top. The front of an Xbox One.Most Xbox controller cleaning jobs require nothing more than an external sweep. Still, even if your controller seems relatively clean, you should give it a full cleaning.
How to Open Xbox One Controller [Even without a Torx Safety Screwdriver]
You may need water as well, depending on the percentage of your isopropyl alcohol. If your bottle has a higher percentage, you may need to dilute it with water.
Start by using your can of compressed air to blow away any surface dust, pet hair, or human hair from the face of your controller. If you have an air compressor, you can also use that to clean surface dust, but be careful.
Too powerful of an air stream may push crumbs and dust deeper into your controller. With the large bits out of the way, give your controller a rub down using your microfiber cloth. The goal is to remove things like dust from your controller before using the microfiber cloth, as the more junk that gets stuck in your cloth will make it less effective.
Lightly dampen your microfiber cloth with the spray and run over the controller again, paying close attention to the inner space between buttons and the undersides of the thumbsticks. Grab a cotton swab and gently dip it in your isopropyl alcohol no extra water this time.
Again, leave your controller to dry naturally. Now, take a dry toothpick and gently scrape the seams of the controller.
Repeat this process on the edge of the d-pad and on the textured surface of the thumbsticks. You may need to go over the thumbsticks a few times. The textured ring at the top has a knack for trapping and hiding the oil from your hands.
You may want to check under your battery cover, too. During our teardown, we even found oil buildup there, despite using a relatively new controller. With a different dry toothpick, gently poke around the headphone jack, accessory port, and micro-USB connection. You also run the risk of damaging the port if you press too hard, so be careful. Finally, take a third toothpick and lightly soak it in alcohol the higher the percentage, the better for this step. Use this one to clean the ports on your controller, again being careful not to press down too hard.
Once again, leave the alcohol to dry naturally. Simply repeat this cleaning process every month or so to keep your controller working. It should go without saying, but this is an advanced process, so attempt it at your own risk.
First, take the batteries out of your controller. Depress one of the triggers and use the opening to wedge your plastic pry tool into the controller. The goal is to gently pry the handle cover away from the body, not damage any of the internal components. Work your way around the edge of the handle, rocking back and forth with a little bit of force. Rocking back and forth should produce a series of clicks, signifying that the plastic bits holding the controller together have come apart.
Unscrew them using a TR8 bit, being careful not to strip them. Carefully remove the screws and place them in your magnetic parts tray corresponding to their position on the controller top left screw goes in the top left of your tray, for example.
Finally, grip the front of the controller and gently poke at the sticker in the battery bay. Puncture it with your screwdriver gently to reveal another screw. At this point, this screw is the only thing holding your controller together, so be sure to grip the body when removing it. The front should fall right off. Everything is still held in place, just with a little more room.

The next step is to remove the handle covers from the side of the Xbox One controller. This will allow you access the torx screws to remove the front and back panels of the controller. The easiest way to remove the handles is to insert your plastic trim tool or flathead screwdriver at the base of the handle where the back, sides, and front of the controller molding all meets.
Once you get hold of an edge, gently pry it off the controller. You might hear a few snaps — those are typically the clips releasing. Just make sure nothing is broken in the process.
You can always buy replacement parts controller parts on Amazon if you accidentally break parts and need to replace them.

The middle of this sticker is covering a screw that is needed to separate the front, and back of the Xbox One controller. This will void your warranty on the controller. To disassemble your Xbox One, you will need the following items: X Research source Flathead screwdriver substitute plastic tool if possible T8 Torx screwdriver T9 Torx screwdriver T10 Torx screwdriver Plastic prying tool optional, but recommended. Disconnect your Xbox One from all sources. Ground yourself before taking apart your console.
Static electricity can permanently damage circuitry, so make sure you practice proper grounding techniques like touching a metal surface before working. Remove the left-hand side panel. Insert a flathead screwdriver or spudger into the space between the back-left corner of the console and the plastic grille on the left side of the console, then gently pry the grille away from the console. It helps to use a plastic tool rather than a metal tool here, since the grille is made of relatively delicate plastic.
Slide the casing bracket off of the console. The casing bracket is on the far-right side of the grille area. Slide this left until it pulls away from the console.
Unhook the second bracket. It's on the far-left side of the grille area. To unhook this bracket: pull on the bottom of the bracket while pushing on the top of the bracket, then insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam that's covered by the warranty sticker on the back of the console and pry until the bracket unhooks. How to take apart Xbox One S
This is easiest if the console is upright. Breaking the warranty sticker will officially void your warranty. Detach the rest of the casing brackets. Insert your screwdriver into the top section of the grille that's on the back of the console and twist it until the bracket unhooks, then repeat this process all the way down the side of the console.
Once all of the brackets are unhooked, the back part of the Xbox One's casing will pop open. Do not pull the casing off of the console yet. Doing so will break the ribbon that connects the front of your Xbox One to the circuit board.
